This weekend, we celebrate the birthday of our country.
There are fireworks.
There are parades.
There are gatherings.
This weekend, I attended a memorial brick dedication for a
young man who loved our country more than his own life. He made the ultimate
sacrifice.

While we celebrate our independence today, we also must be
thankful for those who allow us to celebrate this day, year after year – men
and women like United States Marine Corporal Ryan J. Cummings who willingly
signed on for extra tours that ultimately would lead to his death; men and
women who serve as police officers, fire fighters, ambulance drivers and rescue
squads, who think first of others before themselves; men and women who serve
during times of peace as well as times of war; men and women who stand up for
those who are weaker; and men and women who speak for those who do not have a
voice.
I am blessed beyond all measure to be living here, in the
United States of America.
Thank you to everyone who makes our country a family.
